Nestled on the left bank of Kyiv, Café 128 CT marks the inception of a new coffee shop chain within the residential complex of Comfort Town. Spanning approximately 110 square meters, this establishment sets the stage for a unique blend of ambiance and culinary delight.

Embracing the Locale: Materiality and Texture

Berezen Studio embarked on a journey to harmonize the café’s design with its surroundings, drawing inspiration from the local landscape. The dismantling of partition walls unveiled a lengthy facade, inviting ample natural light to filter through tall windows. This architectural canvas paved the way for an exploration of textures and materials, culminating in a tapestry of ceramic blocks, clinker brick, warm-colored plywood, and natural linoleum. These elements not only lend visual allure but also evoke a sense of warmth and homeliness, echoing the café’s ethos of community and comfort.

Culinary Harmony: A Symphony of Clay and Cuisine

In a delightful synergy of design and gastronomy, materials baked from clay find resonance with the café’s menu, which boasts artisanal bread crafted from a special recipe. This fusion of culinary craftsmanship and architectural ingenuity creates an inviting atmosphere, transforming the café into a cherished gathering space for local residents—a veritable street living room where neighbors converge to savor both food and fellowship.

Spatial Dynamics: Enhancing Accessibility and Adaptability

The expansion of the café resulted in multiple entrances, each strategically retained to accommodate foot traffic from different sides of the building. However, this spatial reconfiguration posed a challenge in terms of navigation and ambiance. To mitigate the elongated path from entrance to bar, Berezen Studio employed visual segmentation, creating distinct zones within the space. This design intervention not only enhances spatial flow but also affords flexibility, with the side hall serving as a versatile venue for private events while preserving the café’s open, inviting ambiance.

Furniture Fusion: Blending Tradition with Innovation

A stroke of serendipity led to the discovery of vintage plywood chairs from IKEA, their slotted stripes serving as a motif echoed in the facades of radiator grilles. This thoughtful integration of furniture design with architectural elements not only maximizes seating capacity but also infuses the space with a touch of nostalgia and modernity. Additionally, the emphasis on locally sourced materials and craftsmanship underscores the café’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

In essence, 128 Comfort Town Coffee Shop emerges as more than just a culinary destination; it is a testament to the transformative power of design in fostering community, comfort, and connection. Through meticulous attention to detail and a nuanced understanding of space, Berezen Studio has crafted a sanctuary where patrons can indulge their senses and forge meaningful connections amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life.
